Intensive Russian Strikes Cut Power In Ukraine's Capital

Power facilities targeted in Ukraine
Ukraine's energy systems have faced increased strikes in recent weeks

Overnight, Russian missile and drone strikes have resulted in blackouts in large parts of the capital city, Kyiv.

Nine people were hurt while inhabitants in eastern neighborhoods were plunged into darkness and dealt with interruptions to drinking water, according to city officials.

Simultaneously, a seven-year-old child was fatally injured in a distinct Russian drone strike in the Zaporizhzhia area in the country's south-east, according to local officials.

Moscow has intensified strikes on power infrastructure over the past few days, while Ukrainian leadership has requested "real steps" from allies to apply pressure on Moscow.

"The necessity is not superficial actions but decisive action - from the US, Europe and the G7 - in delivering air defence systems and applying restrictions," he wrote in a social media post.

Officials stated that 450 drones and several dozen missiles targeted the country's power systems, characterizing such attacks as "cynical and calculated" and against "everything that sustains normal life" as the weather cools.

The energy minister said Russia was "launching a major assault" and technical staff were working to restore power.

A wave of strikes hit power facilities and civilian homes in the capital.

Five out of the nine people hurt in the strikes on the capital have been transported for medical care, per statements from local officials.

Area administrators said the urban area endured intense attacks throughout the evening. A seven-year-old child died and multiple civilians were hurt.

The assaults succeed periods of air raids in the region, sections of which are currently controlled by invading troops.

The entire country is under warning for advanced weapon attacks, which are tougher to detect.

Government officials told reporters that Russia was intentionally trying to demolish the national power system, with attacks already disrupting energy systems.

He said energy workers and officials were preparing for additional strikes.
