Intense Winds Leave Tens of Thousands In the Dark in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals advised to avoid going out as strong winds batter the country.

Severe winds hitting velocities of up to 155km/h (96mph) have left approximately 90,000 homes lacking electricity and led officials to call off in excess of 100 flights, based on local media.

The gales are influencing the entire South Island and lower areas of the North Island, per the national weather agency.

New Zealand authorities have announced uncommon high-level wind alerts - the top caution category - in key areas such as these major districts.

People have been urged to avoid going outside, avoid travel, and get ready for additional utility disruptions.

Broad Damage and Crisis Measures

The power cut seems to be impacting households predominantly in the South Island, although authorities state that energy was being slowly brought back.

Local media have stated that in various locations roofs have been ripped off houses, while trees and electricity poles have been brought down by the gusts.

Within the capital, a person was killed after being impacted by a tree branch at a frequent walking route on Tuesday.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a female was swept into oncoming traffic on a street by a intensive burst, in a event that was captured in a viral dashcam video.

Air travel entering and leaving the metropolis have been halted due to the winds, while some roads and libraries are also closed.

At the same time local leaders have announced a state of emergency, to facilitate disaster response efforts.

Work Stoppages Alongside Severe Weather

The wild winds on today occur while tens of thousands of school staff, physicians and civil servants are engaged in what has been termed a "major walkout", requesting higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

Yet the intense climate has compelled them to alter some of their plans, with some outdoor rallies relocated inside or abandoned.

Like conditions are also sweeping the neighboring country, ushering in a high-temperature event to the remote areas.

Agencies have issued burning restrictions for concern about forest fires.
