The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are rising, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
