Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
